Hair Extension Care Guide: Washing, Detangling & Storage

Some Important Hair Extension Care Tips for African-American Women - Her Hair Company

Good hair-extension care starts with one distinction: installed extensions and removable extensions are not maintained in exactly the same way. A sew-in or lace installation stays attached to a foundation, while clip-ins can be removed before washing, sleeping and storage.

There is no single washing schedule that fits every extension type. Follow the care instructions for the exact product and installation, and clean the hair when buildup, sweat or styling products make it necessary.

Detangle gently from the ends upward

Work through tangles in small sections, beginning at the ends and moving upward instead of pulling from the top through knots. For installed hair, support the weft or attachment area while detangling so you are not adding unnecessary tension.

Wash according to the extension type

Installed extensions: use a routine appropriate for the sew-in, lace or attachment method. Focus on removing buildup without aggressive rubbing or tangling the foundation.

Removable extensions: take the pieces out first and wash only as needed. Clip-ins should not be treated like natural hair that is washed on a fixed daily schedule.

Dry completely

Removable extensions should be completely dry before storage. For installed styles, the hair and the underlying foundation should also be dried thoroughly after washing. Leaving an installation damp for long periods can make maintenance harder and can contribute to odor or scalp discomfort.

Use heat intentionally

Human hair extensions can often be heat styled when the specific product allows it, but repeated high heat can shorten the usable life of the hair. Use heat protectant, moderate temperature and fewer passes rather than relying on maximum heat.

Protect the attachment points

Clips, wefts, lace and bonded areas should not be handled like the free lengths of the hair. Avoid unnecessary pulling, heavy product buildup around attachment points and techniques that conflict with the installer or product instructions.

Store removable hair clean and dry

Before storage, detangle the hair, make sure it is fully dry and keep it in a clean place where it will not be crushed or tangled. For clip-ins, store the pieces unclipped and avoid folding or stressing the attachment area.

Care depends on how you wear the hair

If you use removable extensions, see our dedicated Clip-In Hair Extension Care Guide. If your install includes lace, see Lace Closure Care.
