Human hair extensions can look dull, tangled or weighed down after repeated wear and product buildup. In many cases, a careful reset can improve how the hair looks and feels, but “reviving” extensions has limits: maintenance cannot reverse permanent chemical damage, burned fibers, broken clips or severely damaged wefts.
Start with a damage check
Before washing, look for loose clips, damaged wefts, torn lace, excessive shedding or sections that have been heavily heat- or chemically damaged. Structural problems may need repair or replacement rather than more product.
Detangle before washing
Work in small sections from the ends upward. Do not drag a brush from the top through knots. For removable pieces, support the weft or attachment area while detangling.
Clean away buildup
Wash according to the extension type and the product's care instructions. The goal is to remove styling buildup without rough scrubbing, twisting or tangling the hair. Installed hair and removable pieces require different handling.
Condition the lengths and ends
After cleansing, use an appropriate conditioner where the hair needs softness and slip. Avoid assuming that adding more oil or heavier products will fix every problem—too much product can simply create another layer of buildup.
Dry completely
Let removable extensions dry fully before storage or heat styling. Installed extensions and the foundation underneath should also be dried thoroughly after washing.
Restyle with moderate heat
If the exact product allows heat styling, use heat protectant and moderate temperature. Fewer controlled passes are preferable to repeatedly using maximum heat to force the hair back into shape.
When should extensions be replaced?
If the attachment area is failing, the hair is breaking extensively, or previous chemical and heat damage has permanently changed the strands, additional conditioning will not restore the original structure. Replacement may be more practical than repeated aggressive treatment.
